My name’s Alex Wegner and I’ve been running the Alex-Tattoo-Atelier in Ehningen for 25 years now.
Growing up in Belgium, Dutch and Flemish paintings, those tableaux in subdued colours and a strong expressiveness, started to fascinate me from an early age – Rembrandt always was and still is my personal “No. 1”.
Even though I didn’t get any artistic inspiration from home, art has always been my preferred form of expression, be it drawing, painting, writing, architecture or antiques – everything that man creates |
| with his mind to then transform with his hands in an artistic way fascinates me. As I have had to work hard for everything I’ve become a very disciplined and consistent person, who is rarely 100% satisfied with his own work.
Tattoos are the ultimate and most demanding medium of all. As they have an enormous impact on the lives of those, who entrust you with it, for the rest of their, it is also the one carrying the biggest responsibility. I am always conscious of this fact.
Tattoos are a piece of art that nobody can take away from you, your own skin is the canvas and they become a part of you, and they are the only form of art, that allows you to wear your soul on the outside. A tattoo is a wholly personal, intimate thing, and when I work it out in consultations with the customer - transforming an idea, a fantasy or a dream into an image - when this symbiosis of spirit / mind, inspiration and body develops, then this for me is the ultimate – this is art.
Although I don’t want to compare my painting with the tattooing, there’s a constant to and fro between the two media in my life; in contrast to tattooing painting allows me a greater personal freedom with regards to size, choice of subject, and experimenting around madly. Motto: Try the Impossible!
My heart belongs to both and I am indeed lucky and privileged with regards to my tattoos, as I have a large and loyal circle of regular customers, who just give me the freedom to exercise my judgement. Without my customers I’d be nothing as a tattooist.
Thanks to my positive Buddhist attitude to life and fulfilment as an artist I am a thoroughly happy man, through and through.
It’s not “faster, higher, further” that define my thoughts and actions, but the love for the matter. |
